Spooky2 setup

Set up a Spooky2 GeneratorX Pro and run your first Remote program

From the box to a running program, step by step, with every spot where the official instructions trip people up.

What you'll do: install Spooky2 on a Windows laptop, connect the GeneratorX Pro, wire one Remote through a Boost, make a sample, and start Spooky2's Schumann Resonator preset. Plan on about an hour. The three places most people get stuck are the GeneratorX Pro's own USB cable (Part 3), the Boost the Remote needs (Part 5), and which port number is Generator 1 (Part 7).

Before you start: what's in the box, and what you'll use today

Spooky2's list for the GX Pro Essential Kit:

Today you only need the GX Pro, its power adapter, its USB cable, one Boost, one Remote, and the small stickers for your sample. Leave everything else in the box.

Watch out: the Sample Digitizer is not the Remote. The Digitizer has small metal plates and slides, and it's for scanning a sample such as saliva or blood. Spooky2 says it does a poor job of sending programs to you and recommends the Remote for that. The Remote is a separate small unit with a compartment you open to hold your sample, and it has lights that come on while a program runs.

Part 1
Get the laptop ready

Spooky2 only runs on Windows. Spooky2 recommends a laptop with an Intel processor rather than AMD, used only for Spooky2, because it will run day and night.

  1. Turn off S mode if Windows is in it. S mode only allows apps from the Microsoft Store, so the Spooky2 installer won't run. You switch it off from Microsoft's "Switch out of S mode" page. It's free, but it's one way only.
  2. Stop the laptop from sleeping. Go to Settings, then System, then Power & battery (on some laptops it's called Power & sleep). Set Screen and Sleep to Never, both on battery and plugged in. If the laptop sleeps, Spooky2 loses control of the generator and it gets stuck on one frequency.
  3. Keep the laptop's own charger plugged in the whole time. It's normal for this to be a USB-C cable. It has nothing to do with the GX Pro.

Part 2
Install the Spooky2 software and drivers

  1. On the laptop, go to spooky2.com/downloadspage and download the Spooky2 Starter Pack.
  2. Open the downloaded zip file, extract all the files, and run Spooky2_Setup. Follow the prompts.
  3. At the end, tick "Yes, launch the program file" and click Finish.
  4. Spooky2 will open and say "No generators were detected. Exit and install drivers?" Click Yes.
  5. One driver window after another will come up. Install every one Spooky2 offers. You may see:
    • FTDI CDM drivers. This is the one the GX Pro uses. Click Extract, then Next, choose "I accept this agreement," Next, and Finish. Your version number may be newer than the one in Spooky2's guide, and that's fine.
    • CP210x. This one is for the older XM generator. Spooky2's guide says you can skip it, but installing it does no harm.
    • CH341SER.INF, in a window titled "Device driver install." This is a standard USB driver that Spooky2 bundles. Click Install.
Watch out: installing a driver you don't need does no harm. It's simpler to install all of them than to work out which one you need.
  1. When the drivers finish, close Spooky2. Then do Part 3 before you open it again.

Part 3
Connect the GX Pro to the laptop

Watch out: this is where we got stuck. Spooky2's install steps don't spell out that the GX Pro needs its own USB cable running to the laptop, separate from the laptop's charger. Until that cable is connected, Spooky2 keeps saying "No generators detected," however many drivers you install.
  1. Plug the GX Pro's 12V power adapter into the GX Pro and into the wall. The USB cable doesn't power it.
  2. Short press the Power button on the GX Pro and wait for its screen to light up.
  3. Take the USB cable from the GX Pro's box. Plug one end into the GX Pro and the other into a USB port on the laptop, a different port from the charger.
    • The laptop end of the cable is usually the flat rectangular plug (USB-A). If your laptop only has small oval USB-C ports, you'll need a cheap USB-A to USB-C adapter or a small USB hub.
    • Use the cable from the box. Some USB cables only carry power and can't carry data.
  4. Spooky2's help center says to turn the GX Pro on before you plug in the USB cable.
  5. Look at the top right corner of the GX Pro's screen for a small USB symbol. Red means the laptop sees it but Spooky2 doesn't yet. White means everything is connected.
  6. Open Spooky2. If it asks about drivers again, click No, because they're already installed.

If it still says "No generators detected":

  1. Right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager.
  2. Open Ports (COM & LPT). The GX Pro should show up there as USB serial ports.
  3. If nothing appears there, or you see a yellow warning mark, try a different USB port and check that you're using the cable from the box.

Part 4
Let Spooky2 finish loading

When Spooky2 opens, it shows "Reading frequencies" and then "Loading encyclopedia." That's normal, because it's loading its whole database. Give it a minute or two.

When it's done, you'll see the main screen. The menu across the top says File, Database, Global, Utils, Help, and below that are tabs that say Presets, Programs, Control and so on. If you get to this screen, Spooky2 has found the generator.

Part 5
Wire up the Remote, through a Boost

Watch out: the Remote doesn't plug straight into the GX Pro. The Remote's plug doesn't fit the GX Pro's output sockets. It plugs into a Boost, and the Boost plugs into the GX Pro. Spooky2's Quick Guide says accessories connect "directly to GX Pro or through Spooky2 Boost," which makes it sound optional. For the Remote, Spooky2's own Remote guide lists the Boost as required. Your kit includes two.
  1. The GX Pro is two generators in one box, Generator 1 (G1) and Generator 2 (G2). Each one has two outputs, Out 1 and Out 2.
  2. Take one Boost. It has two cables that go to the generator. Plug them into Out 1 and Out 2 of the same generator. This guide uses Generator 1.
  3. Plug the Remote's cable into the Boost's port labeled BN.

Part 6
Make your sample and put it in the Remote

Spooky2 recommends fingernail clippings, which last for years in a Remote.

  1. Lay down a clean paper towel first. You don't need to sterilize anything.
  2. Peel one of the small stickers from the kit and lay it on the paper towel, sticky side up.
  3. Put a couple of fingernail clippings on the sticky side, cover them with a second sticker, and write your name on it.
  4. Open the Remote, put the sticker inside, and close it. Don't fold or crush the sample.
📷Photo coming: the sample between two stickers, and the Remote open with the sample inside
Watch out: dust. If the sticky side picks up dust from a counter, redoing it takes two minutes. Spooky2 doesn't mention dust, but it wants one person per sticker, and bathroom counter dust usually carries skin flakes from everyone who uses that bathroom. If you're out of clippings, use what you have and swap in a fresh sample the next time you trim your nails.

Part 7
Find out which port number is Generator 1

Spooky2 doesn't label the generators "G1" and "G2" on the Control tab. It shows them by port number, and the numbers depend on your laptop.

  1. Look at the GX Pro's screen. It shows the port number for G1 and for G2.
  2. Write them down.
📷Photo coming: the GX Pro's screen showing the port numbers for G1 and G2
Watch out: Generator 1 is not always the lower number. On Lance's laptop, G1 was port 4 and G2 was port 3. Always go by the GX Pro's screen.

Part 8
Load the Schumann Resonator preset and start it

  1. Click the Presets tab.
  2. Find "Schumann-Resonator (R) - JK." There are two ways to find it:
    • Easiest: type Schumann into the search box at the top of the Presets tab and click the preset when it appears.
    • Through the folders: clear the search box. Folders have a ">" in front of their names. Double-click ">Heal", then ">Remote", and click the preset.

Watch out: the search box searches preset names, not folder names. If you type "Heal" there, you won't see a Remote folder.

  1. Click the Control tab.
  2. Tick Overwrite Generator.
  3. You'll see one box for each generator, labeled with its port number. Each box shows 0% in a pink color, which just means nothing is loaded yet. A big arrow may point at them, which means Spooky2 is asking you to pick one.
  4. Click the box with Generator 1's port number (from Part 7).
  5. The preset loads. You'll see 7.83 (the Schumann frequency), the program name "Schumann Resonator (CAFL)", and settings like dwell, step and preset. Leave all of those as they are.
  6. Click Start. The lights on the Remote come on.

Part 9
Make sure it keeps running

Watch out: "estimated total runtime: 10 minutes" doesn't mean it stops after 10 minutes. On the Programs tab you'll see an estimated runtime of about 10 minutes, and under Options, Repeat Sequence: 0.

In Spooky2, Repeat Sequence 0 means "repeat forever until I press Stop." It doesn't mean "run zero times." Spooky2's 2024 software guide says that with a 0 there, the program repeats until you stop it. The 10 minutes is one pass, and it starts over automatically.

Don't change it to a number. A number makes it stop after that many passes. For example, 100 passes of a 10-minute program ends after about 17 hours. We got this wrong on the first try.

To keep it running, keep the laptop on and plugged in with sleep set to Never. Turn off Wi-Fi once everything is installed, so Windows can't restart the laptop for an update in the middle of a program.

Lance's take

Go slow on day one. Get one generator, one Boost and one Remote working, and leave the rest of the kit in the box. Once this is running, everything else in Spooky2 builds on the same steps.

Write down your port numbers on a sticky note on the laptop. You'll need them every time you load a program.
